It's the bark ...Hi Lucy, thanks for commenting. It's the bark of a Prunus (not sure which one). I thought that the mahogany-looking bark looked as though it was flowing through the raised areas. These are lenticels - the "breathing holes" of the bark, connecting the inside of the bark to the outside.
