There is one thing that is the best thing in the whole world about growing vegetables. Much as I enjoy digging up carrots, picking beans, cutting lettuce, shelling broad beans out of their furry pods (and I like that rather a lot), they do not hold a candle to what I did for the first time of the year today.
Pirates may get excited about digging up golden dubloons using a map to find the spot marked ‘X’. I get more excited about digging up potatoes - the child-like excitement of unearthing the hidden prize. Sad, isn’t it?

Nope. Not sad. Tremendous.

Fabulous!
Esther -- I knew you'd understand :-)
Orkneyflowers - thank you. Very tasty, too!
I think digging up red potatoes is even better. Mine haven't even started flowering yet!
Not say at all. It's all part and parcel of growing your own! That's something I have never done, but would love to do. I bet they will be the most delicious potatoes ever!
It's not sad at all! I dug my first potatoes up yesterday - most exciting :)
not sad at all! Fabulously happy! My kids and I love going hunting for beautiful golden nuggets. We also dug up our first today.
Definitely far from sad. They look lovely - and the excitement of revealing the first spuds of the year is immense.
(Unfortunately, what I revealed this year was the presence of blight. Rats.)
I am with you. I love digging up potatoes and have you noticed that no matter how carefully you dig them up there is always another one which comes up to surprise you when you think you have finished, always.
I feel the same- gold from the veg patch doesnt get much better!
