Lady gardeners

If you have not yet come across the stock of British Pathé short films, then I urge you to take a look. It has a whole range of clips on a wide range of topics, including the one linked to below for all us ladies who would like to take the unusual step of a career in gardening (click on the photo to be taken to the clip).

ABBEY GARDENER

I can't help but think of this sketch, though...

  1. Over-education leads to ugliness, premature ageing and beard growth... So true.

  2. Beard growth! *looks in mirror* Oopsie, forgot to shave this morning.

Blimee, condescending much? And that first vid not from all that long ago either.

  3. Fantastic!!! I remember those Pathe news vids - although that one is a little early. Its easy to forget that even in the 70s that kind of stuff was still seen as normal.

  4. What a brilliant bit of archive. We could all learn a lot from Marion and her golfing shoes... both classics.

  5. Ooh, I've pushed a pram so I van push a flame weeder now!

The Harry Enfield sketch brouoght to mind the very recent item of news about the Sevenoaks vicar who says women should submit to their husbands & not answer questions that they know their husband can answer!!!!!

  7. A great post HM. I would like to use Marions' weed burning machine - have never pushed a pram on a regular basis so hope that it would not exclude me.

  8. Dawn - yes, I must go and shave...

Yolanda & Arabella - it's scary, isn't it? But things are so much better now...

...which leads me to Ms B - I just googled the Sevenoaks vicar. Oh dear - perhaps things haven't changed so very much.

Karen & Joanne - hope it raised a smile.

Camilla - thanks for visiting. Yes, golf shoes - a handy tip.

Anna, I too have never wielded a pram, so I would be patently unsuitable for such complex apparatus as the weed burner. I can make cakes and I do like stroking the soft fur of a kitten though.

Thank-you so much for this link, I shall show it to my ladies!

I'm trying to track down another short film that I saw at Vista last year. I think it was made during the war, teaching a woman how to double dig. Min of Ag? BFI museum? Excellent anyway - if only because no-one double digs properly nowadays!

    Off to shave...

  10. Unfortunately, my laptop gets upset if I look at things on YouTube so I'll have to see if I can view your links on someone else's.

Meanwhile . . . I once went to Westminster Abbey to see if I could get a job as a cleaner and was turned down on the grounds I am female.
