Father and elder child only...
When I was a child, there used to be a TV quiz programme called 'Ask the Family', with Robert Robinson. I was a bit too young to grasp most of the questions, and was also concerned that members of the family were randomly picked to answer certain questions - my idea of hell. However, one of the questions I always used to enjoy was that of identifying a familiar household object* from a close-up. I was rubbish at it, but it didn't stop me trying.
Why not have a go?

I always hated that bit. (Along with Robert Robinson's smug smile.) But a great idea for a post!

A clue - it is a plant.
This is very tricky. After taking on board your helpful hint I am now certain that it is not a dog chew. Further hints required: is it a bulb ?
OK, I'll have another go (I know I'm going to regret this...) Is it a clematis seedhead?

James - no more clues just yet, as Victoria is near to the truth. Not a Clematis, and not something that I would normally think of as having an attractive head post-flowering.
Victoria, Robert Robinson is even more smug on Brain of Britain.
Tricky! I had Clematis seed head on my mental list too... back to the drawing board for me!

Congratulations, Victoria - it is indeed a close-up of the head of an agapanthus, after the petals have fallen.
No prizes I'm afraid, but you do win the opportunity to enjoy being as smug as Robert Robinson. Well, maybe not quite that smug.
Actually, I half expected you to say I was completely wrong, because I looked at my agapanthus seedheads and they were much greener than that. They didn't seem to have that sort of bloom on them.
I can't claim much credit, because you were very generous with your South African clue. Still, as yet another BBC television host would say, "good game, good game"!
I have no idea what that is... but now that I know it's a plant, and a cool-looking one at that, I really want one! lol. Is it some kind of funky tillandsia?
