GBBD - August 09

I've been neglecting the blog a bit lately, as well as my fellow bloggers. I have a lot of catching up on blog reading to do. The garden, luckily, does its own thing and carries on regardless, whether I intervene or not. And so, some stars of August chez Mouffetard...

I've had a bit of a 'thing' about Crocosmias over the past couple of years. The devilishly handsome 'Lucifer' has just about gone over (and I failed to do a GBBD in July, so his chance has gone for this year). But here are:

'Zeal Tan'

'Solfatare' - beautiful bronze foliage

'Zambezi' - bought at Tatton show.. I can't look at the flowers without thinking of Boring Bob Grover.

So many other plants are flowering in the garden, and so much ORANGE!!!!!

Not room for too much subtlety in August, but here are a few...

Tricyrtis ‘White Towers’ - bought at Arley Hall a fortnight ago, and my first toad lily.

Cornus canadensis

Kniphofia 'Bees Lemon'

GBBD is hosted by Carol at May Dream Garden. Thank you Carol, and head over there to see what is blooming in other bloggers' gardens.

Lovely orange - my favourite flower colour. I'm very taken with Crocosmia zambezi* - I'll have to look out for that one. For some reason my Crocosmias are sulking this year - I haven't had one flower from them yet.

I love the bee photo :-D

* Oh noooo! - now I have that song in my head.

Lovely to see your crocosmia - now that I have nearly got rid of the vast swaths of good ol' fashioned Mombretia I was looking to see what varieties of interesting crocsomia are around as they seem to do so well here.
Solfatare looks lovely.

I love the look of 'Zambezi' that is one I have not seen before. I've been eyeing up 'Star of the East' recently!

You're Tricyrtis ‘White Towers’ looks rather lovely too.

Fab photos, thank you :o)

Enjoyed your August flowers HM. My Lucifer has gone over too and I would like to have a crocosmia in flower now - I am quite taken by Solfaterre :)

I unfortunately lost Solfatera - I agree with you that its foliage is very attractive and the flower colour is a lovely change from "Montbretia orange!!"

Crocosmias are very expensive annuals around here, so I never see any besides 'Lucifer.' 'Solfatare' is such a cool variation on the theme. I have a feeling that 'White Towers' won't be your last Toad Lily. They are such great plants. I don't grow that cultivar, but I think I might have to find a space for it. I love how the anthers (polleny part?) are lavender. Your photo of the Kniphofia is wonderful.

I was at the 'home' of Crocosmia 'Lucifer' on holiday, Bressingham Gardens. In honour of this event, mine's decided to bloom in stages this year instead of its usual all in one go :)

Nice fleurs as usual HM.

Happy Bloom Day 'Happy'! Love the zing of your oranges but the subtle Kniphofia 'Bees Lemon' does it for me :-D

I like the rich colour of 'Zeal Tan'. The bee looks perfectly coordinated with the colour scheme. :)

I was hiking in the Rockies this past week, and there were large patches of Cornus candensis set in moss under the conifers. They looked beautiful rising up from the moss beds.

Thanks for the comments. I don't think I would bother with the crocosmias if they were just annuals! It may rain a lot here, but at least most things survive the winters. I shall count my blessings.

How do you keep the rabbits from destroying your toad lilies? I have bought them several times and they have all met the same demise. damn rabbits.

You have orange, I have yellow. I always wonder how the massive one-color bloom period seems to happen in my garden.

Thanks for your comment, Carol.

Sylvana - luckily no bunny problem here!
